Benefits of Cleaning Your Home in Summer

Extra Time

Many people have some vacation time during summer.  This will give you and your family more free time from work or school.  We recommend utilizing this time to clean those areas of your home that have been neglected for a while.  This will give you a cleaner home that you can enjoy for the rest of your time off before things kick into gear in the fall.

Longer Days

We don’t know about you, but we find it difficult to get the motivation to deep clean our homes during those dark winter hours.  This is a big reason why we save the big cleans for the summer months.  Summer is full of bright, motivational sunshine and more daylight.  You can clean your house for longer sessions during the summer.  We love the feeling of being motivated to clean out carpets, cabinets and deep closets when summer hits.

Get help from the kiddos.

Two words: summer vacation.  Our kids are finally out of school and are looking for something to do.  Why not take advantage and have them help out on a couple big cleaning projects this summer?  Summer chores are a great aid in helping your kids to learn good habits and home responsibilities.  In addition, it will save you some money since you won’t need to hire cleaning services during this season.  It’s the perfect time to involve your kids in house cleaning.

Dust In Your Home

During the summer, many of us leave our doors and windows open regularly.  This leads to accumulation of dust and other particles within your home.  Because of this, you will want to make a habit of regular deep cleaning throughout the summer months to keep your indoor air and surfaces as clean as possible.  This will be especially appreciated why those in your home who might suffer from allergies or other respiratory issues.  Make sure to hit your shelves and cabinets with cleaner since those are places that may be forgotten that tend to pick up a lot of dust.

Summer Cleaning and Maintenance

There are some cleaning jobs that simply make more sense in the summer.  These yearly jobs will keep your home working, your air conditioner pumping, and you relaxing on vacation without coming home to a potential disaster.

Clean the air conditioner!

This is probably the most important item on our summer cleaning list.  An air conditioner that is clogged up with dust and dirt will not function as well or — even worse — could break and leave you seriously uncomfortable in the summer heat.  Simply clean the filter with warm soapy water or with a vacuum cleaner.

Clean and reverse your ceiling fans.

Dusty fans only add to summer allergies and hay fever symptoms. Without proper cleaning, fans will continue to spread dust and pollen as they rotate.  While you are cleaning the fan, make sure you also change the direction of the blades to counterclockwise.  This trick pushes the cold air down ultimately saving you money on energy costs by making your air conditioner more effective.

Window washing screen cleaning.

Take advantage of the good weather and spend a morning cleaning your windows.  Much better to do this now than in the middle of winter!  If it has been a while since you cleaned your windows, opt for soapy water and a sponge instead of just relying on window cleaner.  You may need to really scrub to get the dirt out.

Cleaning your window screens is also a crucial step during the summer when your windows are open more and the humidity can encourage mold growth.  Take the time to suds-up your window screens to keep your breathing easy and enjoy the fresh air.

Clean out your refrigerator and freezer.

In hotter climates, bacteria grow faster — even in the refrigerator.  Take the time to clean out your fridge, rinsing down the surfaces with gentle antibacterial soap and throwing out anything expired or moldy.  This is also important during the season of fruits and veggies – consider investing in a food-grade cleaner to wash your produce and avoid any of the nasty bacteria that could be lurking, like salmonella.

Cleaning your freezer is not only useful but also will keep you cool in the process!  Save this for a very hot day.  Empty all the ice cubes into the clean sink.  Take all the frozen items and put it in the sink, covered with ice, to keep them frosty while you chip the freezer clean.  Remove the built-up frost with your car ice scraper and a little hot water.  Clean up any slow-moving liquid spills.  Throw out anything with obvious signs of freezer burn like grayish-brown spots and thick layers of frost.  If anything is open, it is probably best to ditch it.

Clean your counters every day.

Summer is the season for ants and all sorts of creepy crawlies. The warm weather is the perfect environment for all sorts of bugs that you don’t want to be inviting into your home.  Cut the creepies off from their food source by cleaning the counters of crumbs and sweeping the floors every night.  These small habits pay off big time by warding off the bugs that can be attracted by your messy leftovers.
